New Year Festival | Makeup Tutorial

Goodbye 2019… Hello 2020!

It’s a big new year celebration as we welcome in a new decade! If you’re heading to any music festivals this summer here’s a little makeup inspiration for your night out. My goal was to create a look that is easy to create with minimal products, and away from home! For more behind the scenes action on this shoot, check out my Instagram here. I cover the look in even more detail here on my stories! It’s been a long time since I have used my natural hair, and since I have gone brunette it’s finally long enough to put in these cute space buns. My new year’s resolution is to get back my natural hair colour, which is a light brown. After dying my hair blonde for nearly ten years. As much as I love being blonde, my hair was ultimately dry and very damaged from regular chemicals and products. Until my hair grows out again fully I am currently dying my hair a deep brown on a monthly basis and I love the new look, check out the full pictorial for this makeup Monday treat below!

Favourite ArticleMy collaboration with Jewellsparkle! I had an absolute blast photographing these gorgeous handmade creations from local New Zealand designer and artist behind the name. Experimenting with bright colours and spring flowers was so much fun. Check out the full article and images here.

Most Challenging Article: I find controversial opinion pieces the most difficult to write. There’s always a balance between making your stance clear, defined and well articulated and also an awareness for how your writing will be perceived. This sometimes leaves me on the fence, so one of my goals for 2020 is to be more confident in my opinions about all things fashion! Read the full article on ‘The Freedom of Fashion’ here.

Best Memory: My trip to Europe! I still haven’t finished all the content I created over there in the few months I was away, but it was an incredible experience with so many beautiful places, people and memories. Read the first article about my stay in Singapore here.

Biggest Obstacle: This year I encountered my biggest obstacle during Makeup Mondays! I anticipated that my trip overseas would include many difficulties, both in terms of photography and content. Instead, everything went very smoothly and the challenge of continually finding inspiration to create unique and creative makeup looks proved to be the most challenging this year! My goal for 2020 is to focus on simplicity, and creating more wearable casual makeup looks as well as artistic ones.

Biggest Achievement: Photographing for New Zealand Fashion Week again! This was one of the highlights of my year, and photographing the Maggie Marilyn show was a privilege to be chosen among a select group of photographers. I am so proud of the footage I captured and I look forward to sharing more fashion content with you over 2020!

Biggest Failure: I like to frame my weaknesses and failures in the content of future opportunity. This year I wasn’t able to take on the number of interviews and local features as I would have liked, so over 2020 my goal is to feature many more talented local businesses and creatives on The Wardrobe Blog!

New Year Festival Makeup Tutorial

Tutorial | Christmas Makeup Pictorial

After a whole lot of experimenting and a ton of thought, I created this rad minimalist festival look! After I’ve done so much with heavy, blended makeup looks I am being drawn more and more toward minimal, fresh and natural vibes. This festival look combines the best of both worlds and is super easy to do!

What you will need: Liquid Highlighter, Sequins or chunky glitter of your choice, Nude Satin Lipcolour, Clear Lipgloss, Lashes, Blush, Brow Gel, and if you like you can blend this look with eye shadow. The Rimmel ‘Magnificent Eyes’ Palette below has a beautiful range of colours that has what you need! Check out the full pictorial below…

First, prime and moisturise, then apply a darker foundation with your liquid highlighter mixed in, and fill in brows with a light powder. Brush them upwards with a brow brush and gel. You can skip this next step for a more natural look: Blend a medium and darker shade into the outer corner and crease of the eyelid.

Darken the crease to your liking. Apply a bright blush, I used a hot pink. Then apply feathered lashes. Once the lashes are on use lash glue to apply a few sequins to the outer ends of both. Apply more liquid highlighter liberally on the nose and upper cheekbones, then apply sequins and glitter across the outer and upper parts of the face as you like! You can layer the glitter heavier or lighter as you prefer.

Finally, apply mascara to upper and lower lashes. Add nude lipcolour and smudge gently at the middle of both lips. Apply a clear lipgloss over the top, and you’re done!

Results | The Photoshoot

This photoset was created indoors against a wall and shot from below in a room with stronger light, which emphasises the highlights! Perfect for capturing this festival look. I kept these images very simple, to make them as striking as possible and it also gives them more of an alternative fashion feel which I love!

Technical Info: I photographed this set with my 50mm lens, using solely available light, at 2.8 on 400 ISO.
