A Makeup Monday Tutorial…

Makeup Monday is my favourite way to start the week! My goal for this look was to achieve a vibrant 90’s pop feel, and the result is very ‘Spice Girls’ esque! I have a fascination with makeup that’s very detailed especially around the eyes, so I decided to play around with my new face paints from BodyFX on this rainbow makeup look! For this creative makeup look, I used my favourite necklace as inspiration to draw the colours from, and the rest of my face I kept pretty simple to contrast effectively. The eyes are a combination of a smokey eye and face paint dots brought up around the brow bone underneath my brows, so I had to be careful in my application. How-To Face Paint: Create a solid base. Moisturise and prime as usual. My two favourite brands for this are Nutrogena Sensitive Skin Moisturiser, and MAC ‘Studio Fix’ Primer. Both are lightweight and make your skin feel nice and supple instead of slimy like some moisturisers! This moisturiser can be bought from most supermarkets, and the MAC primer can be bought from Farmers Stores.

Basics: I used matching studio-fix liquid foundation by MAC as a base, blended in using my blending brush. (They’re also much more hygienic than sponges). Then with my angled brow brush, I outline my brows and extend my arch up a bit higher, and using a smaller concealer brush I define the edges in sweeping strokes from the inside out. My cheeks have both blush and contour, I use a soft pink shade from LA Girl Cosmetics across my cheeks on an angle, and a little on the end of my nose. Then I used my brow powder for the contour applied with my blush brush! Finally I added liquid highlighter on my upper cheekbones, and the tip of my nose.

Eyes: For my eyes I used a pale shade of eye shadow as a base - usually a white or near white for me as I am very pale. Then I blended out slowly a dark brown that was almost black, using a soft brush and moving in circles. I’ve found its best to slowly deepen the colour around your eyes as it can be very difficult to remove easily if you make a mistake! To finish I used my ‘Thin Lizzy’ eyeliner to add the flicks, and dots beneath my eyes. The rainbow dots are made with my ‘Faceart’ palette, and you can grab your own from Bodyfx here! This palette is insane, a beautiful product, easy to work with, blend, and the results are flawless. I have used this palette so much since I bought it and this look wouldn’t be possible without it!

Lips: I use my new favourite shade - Rimmel ‘Stay Matte’ Liquid Lipcolour in Pink Blink, with a coat of lip gloss for that 90’s feel. I often work a matte lipcolour underneath most looks to give my lip line more definition. Matte lipcolours don’t move which is fantastic for me, and also if you have petite features.

Once I was finished, I kept the portraits really simple, these are taken in my doorway in the evening and I used a silver reflector to bounce what was left of the daylight across my face. I love it!

My favourite part: Spending a long time on the detail of the rainbow dots was very therapeutic and satisfying! It can be lots of fun to just play around with colours and paint your face with pretty details. I will definitely be doing more of these intricate looks. You could easily make this look more wearable by only adding a few rainbow dots, or adding a cluster beneath the eyes instead of around the brow bone.

The Photoshoot: I am holding a large piece of A1 card behind my back that forms the backdrop of these photos! The illusion of photography. Doorways are always a no-fuss easy way to create beautiful images, but my advice is to not work with white backdrops until you’re confident with getting your lighting even and relatively flat. Good colours to start with are grey, and earthy tones. All up this took me around ten minutes to complete the images, and I’m so pleased!
