Timeless Topics | Where to Start

It can be daunting looking at an empty canvas or a blank screen before the idea grabs you. My first tip to get started on a timeless topic, is to look ahead and work backwards. Take some time to consider what’s relevant, relatable or trending now, and what will be also relevant in ten years time. What are you passionate about? What do you find interesting, intriguing or inspiring? Once you have a topic that has a long lifespan, expand on those ideas to maximise the relevancy. For some topics this can mean tweaking your initial idea to make it relevant to a larger audience and increase longevity. For example, rather than writing content about a specific social platform like blogging on Instagram, create content that relates to blogging on all platforms in general. This will make it relevant and helpful to a larger audience, for a longer period of time.

It can be difficult to predict the nature of trends and the direction of the social zeitgeist, but for me I have found success in expanding my topics and going for a broad overview within my niche, rather than too specific too frequently. If you don’t know what your niche is, consider the areas and topics you are most comfortable with, and most knowledgable about. Your skills and strengths are a great starting place. Remember that not only tangible skills are relevant and interesting to share, but also your personal experiences of undertaking a new skill. The process of undertaking learning fashion photography can be just as valuable and rewarding for your readers to engage with even if you do not yet possess the level of skills to teach the technique. For example I enjoy writing about ideas for creatives, including blogging, photography, styling, makeup and design. Rather than focusing all my efforts on writing to specifically fashion photographers, or fashion bloggers, I try to create informative articles that will relate to a broad range of creatives within the fashion industry. Hopefully like this piece! I often focus my writing around my experiences and opinions with topics I am less technically skilled with such as beauty and makeup. The value of these blog posts is in the relatability and shared experiences, rather than teaching a method. This works two-fold, by creating a variety of content around both skill and experience your writing will be richer and more exciting!

Timeless Topics | Make it Personal

Creating content that is personal is often relatable, and timeless topics are always relatable and easy to understand. This photoset was taken on a live stream I did about ‘The Creative Life’ and I kept it broad to connect with creatives in a variety of industries. From time to time I do a general chatting live stream to share my personal experiences and anecdotes that entertain rather than educate. This kind of content is easy to digest, easy to create, and unique because you can draw from your own original lived experience. Timeless topics usually have some element of personal experience, a connection to something tangible. Do find connections between you and others, and don’t overcomplicate your ideas. Keep it simple by being honest and genuine with your approach, your feelings, and your thoughts during these experiences is what will help to connect you with your audience. Making your content personal creates value for your audience who will gain value from understanding the ‘why’ of what you do, not just the ‘how’.

Timeless Topics | It’s Not About You

Finally, it’s important to remember that timeless topics are not about yourself. At the core of every great topic worth talking about is helping others with a specific problem. Your content must help to solve that problem. Make it about others, and your content will remain relevant. When creating content to solve a problem it must provide your audience with at least one of the following. It must entertain, educate, or inspire. If you can do this successfully in response to a genuine problem, in a relatable and personal way with honesty and integrity to your audience then your content will remain untouched by the trends and provide timeless value hopefully for years to come!
