The Future of Ethical Fashion | Axolotito Business Showcase
It is a privilege and a joy to promote these New Zealand made beautiful pieces with an extraordinary message. I am a huge animal lover, growing up on a farm so my love of nature runs deep. When owner and designer Beebay contacted me, I knew our collaboration would be a wonderful match. There are many rare and endangered animals that rely on our help to preserve their environments and populations, so these pieces are not only the perfect accessory but also the perfect message to preserve their beauty for future generations to enjoy. Ethical fashion for me is not just about the process of how fashion is made and produced, but also the messages each designer promotes. Ethical fashion is about promoting concepts like timelessness, classic pieces that wear long into the future, just like the future of these animals that Axolotito touches on. Axolotito offers a range of different silver pieces, along with a stirling silver range that features some of the cutest rare and endangered animals such as the Honey Bee, Species of Shark, Sea Turtles, and many others feature on the website and are available to purchase now!

Q&A with Beebay Millan from Axolotito | Business Showcase
Q. What inspired you to start Axolotito?
A. Everything began when I won a design contest! I had to represent the concept of happiness through a ceramic product, and I couldn't think of anything other than the incredible smile of the axolotl. I did research in order to find out more about them and I discovered they are an endangered species. It was then that I decided to do something about it, by bringing the knowledge of these animals into my pieces and creating conversation on what we can do to preserve them. After that, I expanded the collection to include other endangered animals and all of them have a little smile as a distinctive characteristic.
Q. What is your favourite ‘Axolotito’ piece?
A. It's hard to tell, sometimes I find myself sighing when I finish a new piece, I just feel that I can’t handle the cuteness! It may sound silly but I put my heart into each and every one, they are my little babies. If I had to choose then perhaps the silver bee necklace would be my favourite, their existence is so important for the balance of the nature as they play such a huge role in the environment. I also love their chubby shape and awesome jobs like making honey, and pollinating flowers for us to enjoy.
Q. Tell me a little about Axolotito?
A. I'm Auckland based, in a small studio at my home in Remuera. I love to do custom orders! I get really excited doing something new. I recently created a set of rings for a couple to be married, and I enjoyed that project because I worked with gold and concrete. I love working mixing different materials, every project is a new challenge and I like making real the ideas and dreams of others.
Q. What are your future plans for Axolotito?
A. I would like to connect with organisations that work on the preservation of many endangered species, more specifically from the ones that feature in my collections. I would like to give a percentage of the sales to help their cause, and also to bring the message to consumers that all little action can help to be a big contribution in the conservation of nature.
Q. Tell me a little about yourself!
A. My name is Bebay Millan, I'm originally an industrial designer. I have experience in ceramics, furniture design, 3D modelling, exhibition design and jewellery. I’m a proudly New Zealand resident but my roots are Latin American, I was born in a small city in Mexico in the middle of the desert. I have been creating jewellery for at least 7 years now. I began making ceramic jewellery, then three years ago I developed my love for sterling silver. The way I create each piece is by first making a 3D model design, then a wax 3D printed model and finally the wax gets cast in silver where I finish them by hand. I work using local supplies to get the best quality and I’m also conscious of using recyclable materials. It is important to me to make jewellery that reflects our care for not only the animals but also their environments.
